La Belle Beachfront

La Belle Beachfront

France, Cote d' Azur ~ 10 Bedrooms ~ 10 Bathrooms ~ Sleeps 10 to 20

La Belle is one of the last surviving important aristocratic mansions built on the Côte d'Azur at the end of the XIXth century. This "Belle Epoque" jewel was built in 1899 for the leasure of a steel industrial by the famous Danish Hans–Georg TERSLING who was Empress Eugenie's architect. It has been the theater of magnificent balls. After the Second World War it has been abandoned. The interior designer owner remembers the first time he saw the Villa. "8 years ago, by chance, I came here, fascinated by the three acres park overhanging a little "calanque" at the head of the Cap Brun. After the monumental gate, I discovered this incredible Villa hidden under the Alep pines and centenarian palm-trees.

I felt immediately in love with this masterpiece in peril."The only testimony of its glorious past is the entrance hall, amazing delirium of pink and white marbles, saved from the war destructions. Dotted with red marble of Provence columns, with delicately carved pilasters and cornices, the hall opens on majestic stairs like in a St-Petersbourg palace. "As I thought that the Villa could reveal other treasures or wonders: I have been absolutely seduced .The interior decorator owner gives free play to his imagination and creativity." The very "Fitzgerald" structure and appearance directed my inspiration".

The ground floor with its magnificent volumes, the "enfilades" of the entrance hall, salons, dining-room, the winter garden, library, kept the remaining of the past splendor. While I was stripping the house, I discovered its essential elements: carved woodworks and ceiling with cornices in the dining-room and the library, gypsum works and marble works. Even the winter garden iron work had resisted to the ravages of time. The pomp of the rooms has been softened by the choice of simple 20th century furniture and plain white fabrics to make one's feel more comfortable. The owner took a real pleasure to give rebirth to the gardens after so many years of abandon. He did not find any documents on what was their splendor so he just created his own conception of what it should have been. Now, 8 years later, This impressive estate has found its own spirit.

Its new owner played with 1.500m² housing in a free and easy manner. No preciosity, no ostentation. Simple and without great value furniture are spread here and there. On the walls, pictures and old charming portraits live together with "trompe-l'oeil" and painted compositions made by Magali Nourissat, the owner's daughter who is a sculptor and a painter. The restoration of the Villa results from the collective effort and great complicity between father and daughter, between painter and architect artwork.
